It might like you to do it for work files, tax documents, or school tasks. But now you finish with two distinct folders in two different locations having the same name.

Merge folders with the same name on Mac

When you ready to merge two folders using the same name. Then you’ll need to decide on the final location. It means you will move your folder A to folder B’s location or vice versa. But then when you’re ready, follow these steps carefully.

Step 1:

Initially choose the first folder. This is the one that you like to move to the other folder’s location.

Step 2:

Now hold down your Option key. Simply drag the folder onto the other one, and then release. Make sure always keep holding down the Option key until you view the pop-up message below.

Step 3:

In the pop-up window, tap Merge

The Merge option appears in the pop-up window if:

  • You’ll continue to hold down the Option key unless after you release the folder
  • The folders contain items that aren’t in the other folder. But if both folders having the same items or versions of, you will only view Stop and Replace options.

Merge folders with different names on Mac

If your folders having quite different names. Then you can easily rename one to the other and follow the instructions above to merge them. But, if you don’t do that or have the same items in each folder. However, you can also perform a manual move of the items and delete one folder.

Step 1:

Initially, open both folders.

Step 2:

In one folder that you like to erase items from, tap Edit > Select All from the menu bar. Also, use the keyboard shortcut Command + A.

Step 3:

Now drag the chosen items from the first folder into the second one.

Step 4:

Having the item with the same name in each folder. Now you’ll view a pop-up message asking if you like to Keep Both, Stop, or Replace.

If you select to Keep Both, then the moving item will have the word “copy” added to the end of the filenames.

But if you pick Stop, then the rest of the items will be moved while the copied will remain in the first folder.

If you select Replace, then the moving item will replace those in the second folder.

Step 5:

After successfully move your items, you can remove the empty folder if you like, by dragging it to the Trash.
