The SD Association, which develops memory card standards, introduced a new SD Express specification supporting PCIe 3.0 and NVMe 1.3. It allows you to increase the capacity of existing SDXC memory cards up to 2 TB. To provide additional bandwidth, contacts from the UHS-II interface are used. At the same time, the organization introduced a new format – SD Ultra-Capacity (SDUC), which supports a memory capacity of up to 128TB.
The data transfer speed of the PCIe 3.0 interface reaches a maximum of 985 MB / s. At this speed, recording 128 TB of data will take about 36 hours. The SDUC will record more than 29 thousand films of average length with a Full HD resolution, about 26 million photos with a weight of 5 MB or 16 million songs weighing 8 MB. For comparison, the entire library of the most popular streaming service Spotify has about 35 million songs – it would fit on three SDUC memory cards with a capacity of 128 TB.
Adoption of the new memory card specification does not mean that the advanced SD Express will appear in the near future. In addition, at first manufacturers are unlikely to be able to squeeze out of them all the “potential” – SDUC with the maximum possible amount of memory is unlikely to be presented in the next few years,
